1-on-1 Remote Comics Teaching

I offer a 10-week comics curriculum for high school students who are interested in expounding on their passion for cartooning! Each weekly lesson will act as a deep-dive into a specific aspect of comics — from pacing, to page layout, to character design. If you’re interested in pushing your sequential art skills in a focused and encouraging environment, then this intensive is for you!

This curriculum was first created and implemented by me while teaching Cartooning at The Governor’s Institutes of Vermont in 2021, for their Summer Arts intensive. Now, instead of instructing a full class, each lesson has been modified in order to teach individual students 1-on-1.

Goals of the Course

The core objective of each session is to both impart students with cartooning knowledge that may have been otherwise inaccessible, and to bolster confidence in their own unique expression through visual storytelling.

Some subjects covered throughout the curriculum are: Experimenting with Style Shift, Utilizing Memory and Imagination, and Advocating for Creative Autonomy — aspects of comics-making that are beneficial both professionally and personally.

The Right Fit?

A free 30-minute video consultation is available for all prospective students. This is to allow potential students to ask me questions about the curriculum, to speak freely about their own interests, and to assess whether individual teaching would be beneficial for them in their comics process. This consultation is for the student to choose me, not the other way around! The only qualification for taking this course is that you have a passion for comics. Having an extensive art portfolio or prior experience isn’t necessary; we can meet each other where we are.

Note that throughout the course I’ll recommend reading materials (for fun, not for homework!) and the standard age-range of these materials will not exceed the category of Young Adult.

Pricing

Each hour-long weekly lesson is $60. A sliding scale option is available upon request if this rate isn’t feasible — no questions asked. Payments can be sent directly through PayPal or Zelle before each session.
